✍️ Consensus Where it Counts: Rethinking Base Layers for the ZK Era 👉Read(EN)
Over the last week, we’ve seen multiple proposals for the roadmap of Ethereum’s Consensus Layer. Most notably, Justin Drake laid out his vision for the ZK era of Ethereum in his talk at Devcon 2024. Dubbed the beam chain or the beam fork, it batches a number of big ticket upgrades for Ethereum, including lowering slot times, faster finality and the ‘snarkification’ of Ethereum’s consensus. The proposal has been met with mixed reactions around its ambition and the timeline for these changes. However, we should also acknowledge how important caution should be for Ethereum given the size of its economy. Despite this acknowledgement, it is useful to consider what a maximally ambitious future of the base layer for a rollup-centric ecosystem can be. In this spirit of “what can be, unburdened by what has been”, this article covers one such future that utilizes advancements in ZK and consensus research. We’ll begin by examining base layers from first principles, after which we’ll explore core concepts in consensus research. Lastly, we’ll dive into how this research can be applied to a new generation of base layer designs especially in a ZK regime.
✍️ The 5 Levels of Secure Hardware 👉Read(EN)
Paradigm released an article on the 5 levels of secure hardware, diving into the progression of secure computing from basic applications to more advanced use cases. The article outlines how we are currently at Level 3, where secure hardware supports near-native performance and the ability to test the limits of programmable cryptography with applications like private machine learning inference. However, the true potential lies in advancing to Level 5, where a global network of secure hardware could handle sensitive data, such as voting and medical records, at scale. While the path forward requires overcoming trade-offs between security, performance, and developer experience, the fundamental design principles are clear: secure hardware is critical for unlocking privacy-preserving computation. This could enable powerful applications, such as the training of large language models on sensitive data, without compromising privacy. As the ecosystem matures, secure hardware will play a central role in creating truly intelligent and safe experiences across industries.
✍️ a16z Crypto Report 2024: New data on swing states, stablecoins, AI, builder energy👉Read(EN)
a16z Crypto Report 2024 covers crypto’s rise as a hot policy topic, the many recent tech improvements to blockchain networks, and the latest trends among crypto’s builders and users. The report also digs into the emergence of key applications such as stablecoins — one of crypto’s “killer apps”, explores the intersection of crypto and other key tech trends like AI, social networks, and games, shares new data on swing states’ levels of crypto interest ahead of the U.S. election, and more. The 2024 State of Crypto report also reveals all-time highs in crypto activity. And it analyzes how blockchain infrastructure has matured — especially after recent scaling upgrades drastically decreased onchain transaction costs alongside the rise of Ethereum L2s and other high-throughput blockchains.
